I interviewed Derek Jackson on the evening of May 26th in his home on Willard Street in<\/p>\n
Kalamazoo, MI. Derek is 30 years old and has been living in Kalamazoo since he was 18 when <\/p>\n
he moved out here for college at Western Michigan University. He was on his parent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <\/p>\n
healthcare until he was too old to continue. He explained to me that he hasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t been enrolled in <\/p>\n
healthcare since. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153When I feel I need to go to a doctor, which is pretty rare, I pay a LOT of <\/p>\n
money out of pocket with no coverage.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Derek tried to enroll a couple months ago and was <\/p>\n
rejected. He tells me \u00e2\u20ac\u0153by the time I went to try and enroll again I apparently had missed the <\/p>\n
deadline. I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know there was a deadline.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d From there Derek explained that healthcare.gov <\/p>\n
was not very helpful in informing him of when he can attempt to enroll again. <\/p>\n
Derek and I discussed the privilege involved in his ability to navigate the internet on his <\/p>\n
own computer to apply for health coverage. He believes that there should be \u00e2\u20ac\u0153healthcare for <\/p>\n
everybody\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and recognizes that there are a large amount of people that wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know how to <\/p>\n
use a computer or even have access to one, that should be receiving coverage. He extrapolates \u00e2\u20ac\u0153if <\/p>\n
it was difficult for me, I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t even imagine some of the issues other people in this country are<\/p>\n
having. He tells me that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153you learn how to live well when you are educated and poor\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, which is <\/p>\n
evident in many other components of his life, but he could be living even better if he enrolled in <\/p>\n
