Péter Érdi was born in Budapest, Hungary, and was trained as a chemist and what today may be called a computational chemist. His scientific interests spanned from mathematical models of chemical reactions via computational neuroscience to the theory of complex systems and computational social science. He likes to teach interdisciplinary subjects, including cognitive science, nonlinear dynamics, and chaos theory.
Péter is married to Judit Hegedüs. They have two adult children, Gábor and Zsuzsanna.
