For this animal with a certain natural indignation curses the pride of humans and, if it accepted the opportunity to join in battle, it firmly peruses a fight and as the victor over pride severely strives to mutilate man. On the contrary, if it detects an indication of humility in a man it runs into as a result of flight and fear, it sometimes halts and allows that man to escape.

Vocabulary

congredior, congredi, congressus sum dep. 3. join in battle; approach

constanter adv. persistently; constantly; firmly

deprehendo, deprehendere, deprehendi, deprehensus 3 detect; recognize

detestor, detestari, -, detestatus sum dep. 1 detest/loathe

discerpo, discerpere, discerpsi, discerptus 3 mutilate

econtra adv. on the contrary

evado, evadere, evasi, evasus 3 escape

humiliatio, humiliationis n. 3 humility

inclementer adv. severely

indicium, indici(i) neut. indication

indignatio, indignationis neut. indignation; anger

insisto, insistere, insisti 3 pursue

interdum adv. sometimes

nitor, niti, nisus sum dep. 3 strive

obvius, -a, -um adj. run into

occasio, ocassionis fem. 3 opportunity

orbis, orbis masc. 3 world

subsistio, subsistere, substiti 3 halt

superbus, -a, um adj. proud

ultio, ultionis fem. 3 retribution

vindicta, vindictae fem. 1 vengeance

Notes

remotis orbis partibus: partitive genitive.

nascens: present active participle.

datum: perfect passive participle.

creatum: perfect passive participle.

naturali quadam indignatione: ablative of means, expressing the means by which something is done.

acceperit: can be translated as perfect active subjunctive or future active indicative.
